We recently got DirecTV after seeing their ad blitz for 75 HD channels. They brag about their “digital picture and sound,” and their great customer service.
The truth is the only way to get digital picture and sound is with a HDTV and an HDMI. Their picture is actually worse than the picture we got with Comcast. Not to mention there is no two year agreement with cable, no picture loss when it rains, you do not have to pay for “leased equipment, and you do not need an ugly dish hanging on your house.
When we purchased our most recent HDTV, we figured we would replace the DVR we had with DirecTV and get an HD DVR to replace it.
DirecTV told us we would have to pay $299 for the privlige of leasing their receiver from them. In addition to this we would have to pay $50 because we were a new customer “and had not established a credit history with them.” Also, we would have to pay $20 for shipping and handling and extend our contract for another two years.
Maybe DirecTV thinks it is in the cellphone business because all they want to do is lock you into long-term contracts and make you bleed money to them forever. Their symbol should be a ball and chain because that is what they really are. Cable here I come!

I can’t believe what a bad install job I found on the roof when I just went up there. There were 3 loose bolts, and at least one bolt was missing. The entire dish is so loose it’s about to fall off the roof. I’d fix it myself, but a bolt is missing.
I called DirecTV so they can come out of fix this terrible installation, and they want $80 for it! That’s outrageuous! You’d think they would want to fix something that was their fault to begin with. I can understand occasional problems – but wanting to charge me for something that is clearly not my fault is crazy. I installed the previous dish and it was up there for years & years with no problems.
I’ve always liked DirecTV, but after this, I’ll be looking at switching.

I have had DirecTV for over 3 years and recently decided to switch to Comcast in order to have the internet and cable combined in one service. When I called to cancel my existing service with DTV I was told that there would be a cancellation fee. This was surprising to me because I had already past the 2 year contract timeline with them at least a year ago. When I asked why there would be a fee I was told it was because I had upgraded my receiver at Best Buy in April of 2007 and that that resulted in a new contract being issued. Had I known at the time of purchase I was signing up for a new 2 year agreement at the point of sale, I would not have done it. I feel this is just another way to gouge consumers and make a profit from services not rendered. That said, avoid this company like the plague.

DIRECT TV has the worst customer service. I ordered direct tv and was supposed to have someone installing the dish. the guy never showed up and reported that i didn’t have the landlord form (which was signed and waiting for him; that the building was not accessible while we have 3 direct tv dish on the top of the building…
I have complained to them but it was like talking to a wall…
STAY AWAY!!! DON’T WAIST YOUR TIME OR $$$$$

Directv has the worst customer service I have ever experienced. They lie to you and cheat you out of credits and discounts. None of their employees will tell you the same thing. They all have a different answer for the same question. And if you do decide to be their victim, I mean customer, don’t ever refer anyone else. You’ll either never get your $50 referral credit or they’ll have your service shut off because the idiot on the other end of the phone gave you too many credits.
Also, I agree with other reviews that frequently the sound and picture are not in sync.
