DISH Network’s ViP722 and ViP622 DVRs have a lot of great features, including the ability to tune local ATSC (digital over-the-air) stations and use all of the DVR features on them.
However, they neglected to enable the QAM (digital TV on cable) tuner capability that’s built into the ViP’s chipset — and is found in even the cheapest TV sold at Wal-Mart.
Why would they leave out such a basic feature out of their top-of-the-line DVR?

We went through three of these receivers in one year. All three had similar problems with capturing the video correctly. We would get checkerboard pictures or a yellow or orange screen during playback. Occasionally they would shut down due to loss signal, had a tech come out and look at it and said it was set up correctly. Very poor customer service when calling, they would have you go through about an hour process to clear everything off you DVR and then you had to reset it back up, including all programs that you wanted to record. Then call back if you still had problems, AAAHHHHH! We finally gave up and switched to another service provider.

The reciever works great but… Dish Network nails you for an extra $12 a month (or DVR and HD)for the priveledge of using “Your” reciever. I think I’ll drop my Dish Network subscription, If I can, and use the reciever exclusively for over the air broadcasts.

On my third reciever, previous 2 went into crash mode where they would not stop rebooting, they do ocasionally freez up. Dish customer support so far has been ok but I think they are getting not very happy about having to keep replacing this unit. Customer support rep I spoke to last week said “it must not be a problem with the 722 as they are very reliable, and the same problem in the same house; something else must be wrong” My computer and tv run off the same power strip and they run fine,so it’s not a power issue as they may try to point to. It would seem after reading reviews here the customer rep lied to me about the 722’s reliablility as it is a common problem. I think if this one goes I will switch back to DTV.

I’m not sure what Dish Network a previous evaluater uses, because I have DishNetwork with Turbo HD and I do not get charged for owning my receiver…in fact, I would have been charged $7/month to rent one…the receiver works fantastic.
