Furthermore, the term “illegal” itself is a big vague. Acts that are prohibited by codified or common law can be either criminal or civil infractions. Intellectual property law used to be almost completely civil. In other words, unless you were running an operation to duplicate copyrighted works in mass quantities to sell or distribute, generally the worst that could happen is you might get sued for damages. To catch someone who has been watching streamed movies “illegally”, the copyright owners or their agents would have to either monitor (i.e. “tap”? grounds for legal challenge, perhaps) your internet connection or literally catch you in the act by standing behind you while you watched, because streamed movies are typically buffered to RAM (volatile memory) which will dump its contents as soon as it’s needed by another application or when you power off the computer. Therefore no evidence remains after you stop watching, generally speaking.
