Wow nothing like the old super generalized answer that’s inaccurate and misleading.
Netflix offers streaming movies as part of its service to subscribers. Do you think that’s illegal Bo Jackson, Dante, and Casting Shadows? Don’t be stupid.
And whether or not you personally pay for it is not necessarily material, xX Jasmine Xx; some movies are out of copyright protection and could be streamed, copied, traded, whatever for free.
A question like this demands a basic understanding of intellectual property law. If an “artistic work” is not in the public domain, i.e. the authors or creators have copyrighted it under the laws of their jurisdiction, then they control legal access to it. They can charge people to look at it or not, as they see fit. Some copyrighted works are voluntarily shown for free, to create more exposure for the artist or other reasons. Other times a company will reimburse the copyright owner for the right to display or broadcast a copyright work for “free” to the end-users/viewers (ala Hulu, etc.). After all, what is an over-the-air television station but a streaming service, when you really get right down to it? Just because the analog radio-spectrum TV didn’t traditionally buffer the stream in volatile storage doesn’t make the difference.
One might assume that what you are asking about is for the worst case scenario where you know the movie in question is under copyright, you know you did not pay the copyright owner to see it, and you know that the stream provider (”broadcaster”) also did not pay the copyright owner. In that case, it is probably technically “illegal” to watch it, but your liability under such a theory is probably less than that of the broadcaster. Furthermore, the term “illegal” itself is a big vague. Acts that are prohibited by codified or common law can be either criminal or civil infractions. Intellectual property law used to be almost completely civil. In other words, unless you were running an operation to duplicate copyrighted works in mass quantities to sell or distribute, generally the worst that could happen is you might get sued for damages. In recent years, however, the big corporations have successfully lobbied for criminal penalties against copyright violators in some jurisdictions. To know what the current law is in your country you’ll have to do some research online or in a law library.
To catch someone who has been watching streamed movies “illegally”, the copyright owners or their agents would have to either monitor (i.e. “tap”? grounds for legal challenge, perhaps) your internet connection or literally catch you in the act by standing behind you while you watched, because streamed movies are typically buffered to RAM (volatile memory) which will dump its contents as soon as it’s needed by another application or when you power off the computer. Therefore no evidence remains after you stop watching, generally speaking.
